Journey Through the Lens: From Epsom to Global Fame By Local Photographer Willy Camden
My photographic journey began at the esteemed Epsom School of Art, where I immersed myself in the art of photography. From there, the magnetic allure of the fashion industry drew me in. In the heart of London, I found myself working in a vibrant photography studio. The long hours were grueling, but they brought me face-to-face with iconic figures of the photography world, such as Mario Testino and Nick Knight.
Upon stepping away from the studio's confines, I forged deep professional ties with some of the prodigious talents I had encountered. Notably, I had the honor of working closely with Ellen Von Unwerth. Ellen, with her unparalleled creative vision, and I embarked on international escapades, capturing imagery for legendary campaigns like Guess Jeans. It was on one of these assignments that fate introduced me to my beloved wife, my constant companion for the past 33 years.
A significant turning point came when my work graced the covers of prestigious publications like The Sunday Times Magazine and Elle Magazine. These accolades gave me exclusive access to the glamorous world behind the curtains of top-tier fashion events. My lens captured the timeless beauty of supermodels like Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.
However, a serendipitous call from an actress pivoted my career towards celebrity portraiture. My signature style became sought after by international publications such as the Swedish magazine Cafe, FHM, and Playboy. One of the highlights of this phase was my collaboration with GQ magazine, where I had the privilege of shooting stars like the legendary band Oasis in Japan, and renowned celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton.
Throughout my illustrious career, I've photographed a galaxy of stars: Angelina Jolie, Carmen Electra, Britney Spears, Brooke Burke, Eva Longoria, and many more. The UK, too, offered a myriad of opportunities, leading me to work with national icons such as Elizabeth Jagger, Joely Richardson, and Gail Porter. One of my photographs of Gail Porter was famously projected onto the façade of the Houses of Parliament.
