Sea & Shore: A Scintillating Photography Show at Malaga Cove Library By Photographer Tim Truby
The Malaga Cove Library will be hosting “Sea & Shore: A Summer Photography Show” from June 5 to July 22, 2024. The reception will be June 28, 4-7 PM at the Library. Everyone is welcomed.
Members of PADA, a peninsula-based group of photographers and digital artists display … works on paper, metal and canvas celebrating what happens in places where land and sea come together – along with the varying textures of sand and fog, weathered wood and luminous light.
From the show write up
A total of 16 PADA photo artists (with 2-3 images apiece) will provide their own unique reality of "sea and shore" here in the South Bay. And most have done numerous gallery shows and/or photo contests. These images are a small sampling of the work.

Title: ferry series, Tillikum
Media: ink on paper
Description: Taken on a ferry in Washington, this image was made with a medium format analog camera. It is part of a series that explores duality using the window to separate the world as it is and the world that is made.

Title: Velella Velella
Media: archival paper, wood frame
Description: These jelly fish-like creatures are also known as "by-the-wind sailors” since Velella are gently pushed across the ocean’s surface. They catch their planktonic prey using tentacles lined with stinging nematocysts. And while they look very much like jelly fish, they are actually a colonial organism related to the Portuguese Man O’ War – but the Velella’s sting is mostly benign to human beings. Taken at Pismo Beach, May, 2023.

Title: Sacred Cave Sunset
Media: framed metal
Description: A little known sea-cave on the PV Coast. A cave that only receives sunset light at Winter Solstice … and at low tide. The spot can be tricky to shoot even for someone who knows the risks. So a photographer proceeds with caution when wading into the rocks, knee-deep water and the incoming waves. An 8 sec. exposure.

Title: The Low and Long of It
Media: archival pigment print
Description: Low tide brings a natural palette to the long pier at Manhattan Beach. … Just add your favorite sunset.

Title: Panning Curl & Gull
Media: digital print, Moab Slickrock Pearl metallic paper
Description: The image was made using long exposure and panning to emphasize the motion, yet keep the curl in focus as it moved. The blurred seagull on the right was moving at a different speed, but close enough to recognize the "blur" as a seagull. Shutter: 0.4 sec

Title: The Red Boat
Media: Epson Hot Press paper with shadow box framing
Description: Photo taken in Patagonia, in the Chilean Fjords.

Title: Bulbous Bow
Media: metal
Description: Close up of the bulbous bow of a container ship in the Los Angeles Harbor.

Title: Sea & Sand
Media: archival pigment print
Description: The visual power of three caught my eye while walking by these lovely swimsuit ladies displayed in a shop window.

Title: Catalina Crowned
Media: archival pigment print
Description: From my balcony, Catalina Island looks like a giant pair of gull wings perched between ocean and sky. Sometimes the island disappears into gray mist. But on this day, the mists lifted to reveal every facet of the island crowned with a cloud rippling along the ridge.
