Livermore Wine Country! – A Winery’s Story – Steven Kent Winery By Wine Aficionado and Founder of California Corks John Krause

Founded on April 1, 1876, Livermore is known to be California's oldest wine region. Livermore has been making and selling wine since 1849, the first winery was owned by Robert Livermore, after whom the town was named. Since then, Livermore has been a popular stopping point to visit.

While traveling back to the San Francisco Bay Area after a business appointment in Tracy, CA, I stopped in at a couple of wineries, and on a napkin, I started my blog at one of the tastings. I did some wine tasting at a few wineries on that Friday afternoon seeking out some award-winning wines, and I found them. Join me on a visit to a family-owned winery or two and a little virtual visit.

This valley has become home to many award-winning wineries, Livermore is famous for making and producing wine and their farmlands. Station in the heart of the Bay Area Livermore is the ideal place to be when you want to find a place to do some wine-tasting and search for that next perfect wine that captures your attention. There are so many family-owned wineries That being said, I will be sure to author another article about Livermore Valley and its wines and wineries in a future article that will address: where to stay, what to do, get around Livermore Wine Country, where to eat, and of course the most popular wineries here.

Livermore Valley's wine heritage is truly rich and storied, dating back centuries. It is fascinating to learn about its origins with Spanish missionaries and how it evolved into a commercial wine region thanks to pioneers like Robert Livermore, Carl H. Wente, and James Concannon. Their contributions laid the foundation for what has become a thriving wine community. This history adds depth and character to the wines produced in the region today, connecting modern-day enthusiasts with the traditions of times past.

The Livermore Valley became an (AVA) American Viticultural Area in 1982 signaling a new era of growth and recognition for the region. Fast forward to today, Livermore Valley is home to over fifty thriving wineries, benefiting from the valley’s unique east-west orientation. This geographical advantage allows for the perfect blend of coastal fog and marine breezes, resulting in ideal conditions for producing perfectly ripened, balanced fruit.

The establishment of the Livermore Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1982 was a significant milestone, marking formal recognition of the region's distinct terroir and the quality of its wines. With over fifty wineries now thriving in the area, Livermore Valley has truly come into its own as a premier wine destination. The valley's east-west orientation plays a crucial role in shaping its microclimate, allowing for the influence of coastal fog and marine breezes. These cooling effects help to moderate temperatures, creating optimal conditions for grape growing. As a result, Livermore Valley wines benefit from the perfect balance of ripeness and acidity, contributing to their distinctive character and quality. It is a testament to the region's unique geography and the dedication of its winemakers to producing exceptional wines.

While there are many wineries to choose from, I have selected three wineries to write about. Let me Introduce Steven Kent Winery as the first. Articles will follow that will highlight Wood Family Vineyards and Cuda Ridge Wines which also call Livermore home in the future.

Steven Kent Winery

The Legacy of Steven Kent Winery

Steven Kent Winery was founded by Steven Kent Mirassou in 1996, but its lineage stretches back 170 years, linking it to one of America's oldest winemaking families. The Mirassou family's winemaking journey began in 1854 when French immigrant Pierre Pellier planted his first vineyards in the Santa Clara Valley. Over the generations, the family played a pivotal role in shaping California's wine industry.

Sixth Generation Winemaker

Steven Kent Mirassou, a sixth-generation winemaker, sought to continue his family's legacy with a singular focus on producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon in the Livermore Valley, but in the last 10 years, he has focused his winemaking attention to Cabernet Franc as he considers this grape and his growing area to be especially well-suited to each other.  His vision was to craft wines that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the world while showcasing the unique terroir of Livermore and you take note of that in his tasting room. He is now joined at the winery by his wife, Beth Mirassou who is the cellarmaster and an assistant winemaker, his son, Aidan Mirassou, 7th generation assistant winemaker, and Sara Mirassou, 7th generation Wine Club Manager.

The Vineyards and Winemaking Philosophy

The success of Steven Kent Winery is rooted in its meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking. The Livermore Valley’s unique east-west orientation allows for the perfect balance of warm days and cool nights, ideal for growing premium Cabernet Franc. The winery sources grapes from four of the finest sites in the Valley.

Steven Kent Mirassou's winemaking philosophy is centered on a deep respect for the land and a commitment to quality. Sustainable farming practices are employed to ensure the health and vitality of the vineyards, while minimal intervention in the winery allows the grapes' true character to shine through. Each bottle of Steven Kent wine is a testament to this dedication, embodying the essence of the terroir and the artistry of the winemaker.
