Los Angeles Holiday Harbor Afloat A Wonderful Tradition in San Pedro By Photographer and Adventurer Dianne Gowder

This year I was lucky enough to be able participate in the parade this year aboard one of the tall ships the Irving Johnson. This boat parade is a 62 year old tradition and still going strong.

We boarded down at waterfront promenade in San Pedro late in the afternoon and set sail for the staging area at sunset. Nature was kind enough to turn the skies a very pretty pink.

We sailed down under the Vincent Thomas bridge to the staging area in Wilmington,  passing huge cargo ships along the way. Everyone was filled with the holiday spirit and we had a lot of fun.

I don’t know how many boats participated but there were boats of every kind all decorated and filled with holiday celebrants. Everyone  waved and greeted each other in passing, such a wonderful community spirit.

A good time was had by all afloat and also by all watching along the route, judging by the cheers and greetings we heard.

Before I finish I want to say how amazing the crew were on our ship, there were mostly young people and so impressive!

Dianne loves to walk and she tries to do at least 3 miles every day before she heads out to work. Her love of  photography evolved from her walks.

“ I have always been amazed by scenery here and more and more I found myself stopping to capture the beauty of my surroundings. As I shared my work I realized that very few people were even aware of what they have on their doorstep!”

Dianne has made it her mission to share the beauty through her photographs and she takes her friends on walks as often as possible.
