Why Sunrise Rowing? By John Matesich with Images By Dianne Gowder
I often ask myself the same question. Why am I torturing myself when the 5:40 a.m. alarm goes off? And I am sure Kenny Atkins asks himself the same question as I drop he and the dory off at the Cabrillo Beach boat launch ramp.
Our course always passes by the SS Lane Victory, one of the last three cargo ships afloat that was used in WW II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The ship was built here in San Pedro in 1945 and she was named after Isaac Lane, who established a college for black youths in 1882 at Jackson, Tennessee.
Looking over our left shoulder, we could see that this sunrise today was special.
We were in awe, and actually stopped rowing as the sun rays exploded in the sky.
And that my friends is why we row. You never know what to expect when Mother Nature is in control.
On our way back, we got a 2nd treat as this container ship was leaving the harbor.

Dianne loves to walk and she tries to do at least 3 miles every day before she heads out to work. Her love of photography evolved from her walks.
“ I have always been amazed by scenery here and more and more I found myself stopping to capture the beauty of my surroundings. As I shared my work I realized that very few people were even aware of what they have on their doorstep!”
Dianne has made it her mission to share the beauty through her photographs and she takes her friends on walks as often as possible.
