Happy Weight Loss! By Shelley Stockwell-Nicholas, Ph.D. President of the International Hypnosis Federation
“Mary had a little lamb, some lobster and some prunes.
A glass of milk a piece of pie and then some macaroons.
It made the naughty waiters grin to see her order so.
And when they carried Mary out… her face was white as snow.”
If you were in my home office three months ago, you’d have seen a young lady with pretty facial features crowded by over-plumped cheeks.
“Dr Shelley I know what I need to do to lose weight; it’s doing it that’s the problem,” she said as she looked down at a plump basketball sized belly protruding from her small frame.
I asked; “If you were to leave my office having gotten what you came for today, what would that be like for YOU?”
“I would not buy or eat fast foods, soft drinks and cookies.”
She, like you, “knows” what and why you stuff yourself fuller than a thanksgiving turkey. Common knowledge informs you about what and when to eat and that “real food is fuel” and that moderation keeps you vital.
In fact, most eat just to eat and may ignore that your body may store more than enough energy with what you choose.
When I first asked her; “What do you do for fun?” She looked like a deer in the headlights; fun? What’s that? Hypnosis helped her re-frame having fun doing more than just chewing food and guzzling soft drinks.
For this young lady, food was a coping mechanism to deal with stress. So, to help, I taught her self-hypnosis to program in healthier ways to cope with stress. I began with a breath exercises; “Inspiration… relaxation…” to program the vegal nerve to help her “take it easy.”
“AHH” she said on the outbreath and noticed an instant stress relief…
In hypnosis, she decided to LOVE to drink water– not alcohol, coffee, and the dreaded soft drinks. She embraced affirmations like; “I drink a full bottle of water before I drink or eat anything else. When I go to a party, I enjoy socializing more and eat less.”
She equated food with love (learned at an early age) and that wasn’t working; so with the help of her Higher Self, she to decided to put down her fork and instead, pick up the phone instead to call family members to voice how much they meant to her. Loving expression overroad depression.
Now, three months later, she has overcame boredom and has ventured into a wonderful journey of singing, journaling, drawing and moving her body! Her affirmation uplifted her; “Joy is my compass… It is fun to express my many gifts and enjoy my life in healthy happy ways.”
Lastly, she focuses on her goals, values, and decisions and, seemingly like magic, she has achieved what she came for… a new perspective now and a slimmer body… She released the weight and is enjoing her life more and more.
