Let's Tour…Tour d'Art 2022 Produced by the Palos Verdes Art Center By Photographer and Contributor Arturo Garcia-Ayala
How do you measure great art? Is it by the quality of materials in the work? The message it tries to convey to the audience? Or the iridescent life the artist had to experience to develop the ability to capture inspiration onto canvas? On the Palos Verdes Peninsula there is another way to measure art — in miles.
The Tour d’Art is an annual two day art exhibition featuring thirty artists of various crafts located at four participating satellite studios throughout the Palos Verdes peninsula. Unlike other community art walks where different galleries are within a mile walking radius, the Tour d’Art is a network spanning eight miles along a suburbanized ocean view ridgeline requiring the public to drive to every location.
The distance between studios created an almost unique venue for visiting patrons. As diverse as the horse stables of Errol Gordon’s home in Rolling Hills to the seaside manor of June Treherne in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Another way to measure great art is the passion which goes into every paint stroke, the care of every carving chiseled into warm wood, the air from your lungs used to expand the molten glass. The term “priceless” comes to mind, for how is it possible to put a price tag on inspiration materialized?
The piece is a representation by the artist, but it also is an iridescent reflection of the artist.
It all comes down to the individual when viewing a crafted piece to say to themselves, “I like it.” And even better, “I’ll take it!”
