Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital Announces 2021 Portuguese Bend National Horse Show Poster Contest Winners By Maureen Hazard
The Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital (PCCH), in conjunction with the Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC), announced the winners of their annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show (PBNHS) poster contest on May 11, 2021. It is a prestigious honor for the winners since the 1st place selection will be showcased on hundreds of PBNHS posters displayed across the South Bay, while the other finalists’ artwork will be considered for the horse show program cover and related materials.
While the 2018 and 2019 poster contests were held in person at a reception at PVAC, this year’s contest was conducted virtually for the second year in a row, with PCCH members reviewing all entries online and submitting their top five choices via email to PBNHS Poster Contest Co-chair Lisa Gentry.
“While things are certainly opening up from the pandemic after a long 18 months, we opted with PVAC to proceed with extreme caution and forego gathering in person to select the winning artwork,” explained PCCH President Noelle Giuliano. “Even though we all missed seeing each other at the reception event, the online option worked really well and allowed members, who might not have been able to make the event, to still be able to vote for their favorites,” added Horse Show Chairman Jan Van Riper.
PVAC, led by Executive Director Daniela Saxa-Kaneko and artist Val Simon, helped coordinate the contest and issued the call for entries to their talented community of artists. “We are very grateful for our partnership with the Palos Verdes Art Center for the fourth year in a row,” remarked Poster Co-Chair Jacquie Leimbach. “The remarkable access to their artists and members is truly invaluable,” agreed Lisa Gentry.
The winning artists are Jennifer Siegal (1st Place), Val Simon (2nd Place), Kathie Reis (3rd Place), Debi Adams (4th Place) and Susan Whiting (5th Place). Winning artist Jennifer Segal grew up in PV and attended Chadwick. “As an artist and horse lover, I sketched the teen riders at Mystic Canyon Stable in PV and called on my own experience of riding English as inspiration,” explained Siegal regarding her design.
The winners will receive cash awards totaling $1,500, with a matching donation going to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in honor of the 1st place winner and PVAC.
The Portuguese Bend National Horse Show supporting CHLA will be held September 10-12, 2021
at Ernie Howlett Park in Rolling Hills Estates. For more information, please visit www.pcch.net.
Maureen Hazard is the 2021-22 Publicity Chair for Peninsula Committee Children's Hospital (PCCH), an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that raises money for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Founded in 1957 when a group of women from the South Bay were asked to help generate funds for a new recovery unit at CHLA, PCCH has grown to more than 170 South Bay families who volunteer all year long with the shared goal of helping the kids who need it most. The committee sponsors the Portuguese Bend National Horse Show in early September, as well as the Seahorse Classic golf tournament in the spring. Over the past 60 years, PCCH has donated over 18 million dollars to CHLA. This year all funds raised will support The Associates Chair in Endocrinology and The Associates Chair in Transplant Surgery.
