South Bay-based Strand Boards ride the wave of outdoor showers right into gardens, yards and compounds

No longer just a beach resort amenity, outdoor showers have been increasing in popularity in homes — perfect for an after-ocean or pre-pool rinse off, a morning way to start the day or an under-the-stars, end-of-day ritual.

When Hansni Thadhani wanted to install an outdoor shower in her Manhattan Beach home, however, she discovered a hole in the market: Stylish, outdoor showers that draw inspiration from beach living. In response, she founded outdoor Strand Boards with the goal of combining two typically male-dominated industries — surfing and plumbing — into an easy-to-install outdoor shower that brings unique form and resort-like function to the home.

Today Strand Boards are found in hotels and resorts around the world as well as homes throughout Southern California, from Malibu to Del Mar. Despite the global reach, however, each molded resin board is stillhand-shaped and hand-painted in Manhattan Beach. Plumbing is integrated inside the board, while premium exterior hardware, including faucets and mounting equipment, stand the test of time. With a series of existing beach-inspired designs that include solid colored, striped, while boards come in a variety of designs, Strand Boards can also be customized with images, pattern, logos and even photos.

“I designed this so that it's simple to install and easy to use year-round,” says Thadhani. “You can start using one by simply connecting it to a water source and mounting it to a pole or wall. It gives this instant sense of being at the beach, no matter where you are.”
