Trick-or-Read! The Little Monster is a Real Treat for Halloween By Sheri Fink
Have you ever been afraid of the dark? I can vividly remember what it was like as a small child imagining the spooky frights lurking in the shadows of my room when I was supposed to be sleeping. Fear of the dark is one of the most common fears among children. Based on the letters I received from parents during the pandemic, my guess is that most families with young children can relate, maybe now more than ever.
I was inspired to write my newest book, The Little Monster, to empower kids to overcome this fear in a gentle and soothing way. I’ve been writing children’s books for the past 10 years and strive to create stories that resonate with kids and help them discover something special within themselves because what better way to make reading fun and magical. It was especially fun to create a glow-in-the-dark book for the first time.
As someone who has always loved Halloween (it’s my favorite holiday), but has always been squeamish about anything too scary (even now), I feel for the families who are trying to celebrate the spooky season in a family friendly way. The Little Monster is the book I wish I had when I was a kid that would have gotten me into the Halloween spirit and inspired sweet dreams instead of creepy nightmares.
The Little Monster is counting down the days until his birthday. When his parents decide he’s finally old enough to get his own bedroom, he’s too embarrassed to admit that he’s afraid of the dark. Following a series of humorous missteps to cure his fear, the Little Monster discovers that he can have fun in the dark and relax at night in his own room… just in time for his big birthday sleepover party.
The Little Monster helps kids ages 5-10 overcome being afraid of the dark. Each page features glow-in-the-dark elements that will encourage kids to actually want to turn off the flashlight after reading each page, enabling them to feel safe and secure in the dark.
The message of the story is that just like the Little Monster, kids can find ways to have fun in the dark and sleep peacefully at night. Sharing their feelings when they’re scared can help them feel better. Admitting that we’re afraid is one of the bravest things we can do. Facing our fears can lead to amazing new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us.
My hope is that The Little Monster makes bedtime more fun and meaningful while empowering kids to face their fears and share their feelings. The Little Monster is the seventh book in The Little Series of social-emotional learning books and makes a great gift for kids to read on their own as well as together with the family.
