Among the many treasures beneath its waves, two species have particularly captivated the hearts of local residents and tourists alike: the fascinating sea monkeys, or brine shrimp, and the graceful sea horses.

Thanks to the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, superstar Johnny Depp has a permanent connection to the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

‘Fort Charles, Port Royal’ was built on a three-acre bluff on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, on the site of the former Marineland of the Pacific, now home of Terranea Resort. With or without this hometown connection John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II is a household name, not just in Hollywood, but across the globe.

Reflecting on the recent May 6 historic Coronation of King Charles, III of the United Kingdom gives one pause to consider films that feature stories about “Kings” through the centuries, from true royals to those aspiring for power and prominence. Brew a pot of tea with scones and jam, or enjoy some libation with popcorn and snacks, and tune in……Long live the King whoever he may be!

I always knew flower were SPECIAL. I have always admired their beauty and love the joy they bring. But didn’t realize the strong effect they had on our wellbeing and how truly special they were.

The power of the flowers and their ability to contribute to our emotional health and our wellbeing has been well researched and documented.

Long considered as an iconic symbol of the Peninsula, the Reverend Dr. David Brown and the Architectural Resources Group (ARG) are determined to gain national recognition for Wayfarers Chapel and its architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr., commonly referred to as Lloyd Wright (Wright), as a National Historic Landmark (NHL).

Every home gardener grows tomatoes for good reason. Stores often sell tomato varieties that ship well and look pristine with taste as an afterthought. They arrive at the store after a long journey in a refrigerated truck that turns their flesh mealy and their true taste undeveloped. A tomato from the garden however, has a firm texture and pops with flavor.

Traveling and capturing iconic locations in photographs is my passion. But sharing one’s work is immensely gratifying as well. That’s not uncommon I guess. Every week folks share photos on Facebook, Instagram and such. But gathering Likes for your photos isn’t nearly gratifying enough. Not when Facebook posts are seen and instantly forgotten. 

May is a month of infinite variety with 31 days of different holidays from “old fashioned” May 1st,  “National” Truffle Day (2nd), Quiche Lorraine Day (20th), Wine Day(25th), Hamburger Day (28th), and solemn respectful “Memorial Day”, the last Monday of the month, honoring those who died in military service to the United States of America. 

Recently I had the very great pleasure to sit down and have a conversation with David Benoit, one of the founding fathers of contemporary jazz and  the man who developed the format we know as  smooth jazz,  a long time Palos Verdes resident.
