Worthwhile Self-Communication By International Hypnosis Federation President, Author, Artist and More Shelley Stockwell-Nicholas, PhD

Am I self-confident or self-conscious?

Am I selfless or selfish or, somewhere in between?

Am I a caregiver or a caretaker?

Is my self-talk positive or negative?

These questions call upon your inner-dialogue.

Nourishing self-talk comes down to self-generated stories you tell yourself.

Your brain absorbs inside and outside input to combine memory, habits, experiences, and stories you tell about the past, future, and your perception of the present. Then you step into a viewpoint and believe the stories you conjure up as they become your life’s GPS. Scientists surmise that you create and generate tales neurologically to keep you alive. That’s a terrific story when you think about it.

As a self-proclaimed “neuro-hypnosis expert” (another story I made up because I wrote the book; “Vagal Joy– If you have the nerve– Hypno-neurology”) I note how hypnosis helps you decide the best stories to tell yourself. Great hypnotists teach self-hypnosis and then offer powerful suggestions- using your frame of reference, to rewrite limiting stories so you focus on results you choose.

DISCERNMENT

“I’m proud to be me and I also see; you’re just as proud to be you. We may look at things a bit differently and lots of good people do…”

As you cross into another's world, you communicate your stories to them and they communicate their stories to you. Genuine communication happens both inside yourself, and inside the other person. This happens best when you tell your truth and own the fact that YOU create and generate all the tales you tell. YIPES! For some such truth-telling is a tall order. Denial is NOT a River in Egypt (the name of another book I wrote).

Truth telling to yourself sometimes seems to be risky business. Especially when we live in a world that seems hell-bent on having you tell your personal story from the viewpoint of your mother, father, siblings, friends, mate, culture, religion, media and advertisers. Truth telling takes courage and wisdom.

DO THIS!

Notice what irritates you and then ask yourself:

“What is the story I say to myself about this?"

"Is there a better tale to tell?"

"How can I sooth stress and get out of a mess?"

"What story will bring more joy and love to me?"

Well, why not ask and answer with a better story!

After all the blah, blah, blah, love fits like a glove and not a fist to the jaw.

Here is another story I just made up and I’m sticking to it. "YOU ARE PERFECTION when you love yourself and others complete. Go for it!"

This story works for me. I hope it conjures up a point-of-view that works for you too!
