Riding the Raging Tides: Peninsula and South Bay's Untamed Waves By Photographer and Contributor Dianne Gowder
Southern California experienced some incredible waves and high tides recently an exciting way to round out 2023 and go in to 2024.
Like most local photographers I couldn’t wait to get out and take pictures, bearing in mind that some of those waves were 15-20 feet high. Caution was required. These waves were caused by a strong storm in the Pacific due to unusually warm sea surface temperatures and seasonal high tides.
My first stop was at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro I headed to the start of the breakwater to take a look at the power of Mother Nature!
The waves were coming over the breakwater, yet there were still a few hardy fishermen out on the pier, hoping to catch something! As I walked along the pier I felt the spray of the waves crashing in. The power and the fury. There were a handful of surfers out there too, taking advantage of the huge swell!
The very next day the skies were clear and the ocean, as seen from Point Vicente, was the most beautiful shades of blue yet still churning out big waves.
I found waves all around the peninsula.
Lastly, back in San Pedro at Royal Palms beach, some nice big splashes, they certainly made me go Ooh and Ahh.
I hope you enjoyed the photographs as much as I enjoyed taking them.
I wish everyone a very Happy New Year.

Dianne loves to walk and she tries to do at least 3 miles every day before she heads out to work. Her love of photography evolved from her walks.
“ I have always been amazed by scenery here and more and more I found myself stopping to capture the beauty of my surroundings. As I shared my work I realized that very few people were even aware of what they have on their doorstep!”
Dianne has made it her mission to share the beauty through her photographs and she takes her friends on walks as often as possible.
