In the greater Los Angeles region, Neuro Fitness Behavioral Health is at the forefront of integrating brain science with mental health care by combining cutting-edge treatments utilizing state-of-the-art technology with a holistic, patient-centered approach. Neuro Fitness Behavioral Health is a leader in providing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Neurofeedback therapies to those struggling with mental health challenges.

In recent years, TMS and Neurofeedback have emerged as transformative tools in the battle against addiction, depression, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other related cognitive disorders.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for assessing the effectiveness of TMS treatment options for certain mental health conditions and the devices that are used for these treatments.

Since 2008, FDA has been actively involved in assessing the effectiveness of TMS treatment options for certain mental health conditions and the devices used for such treatment.  As a result of their studies, the FDA  authorized the use of TMS in cases of major depression, in certain cases, pain associated with migraine headaches, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) for adolescents between 15 years old  and 21 years old as well as  other mental health issues.

With FDA clearance medical professionals agree that TMS is a non-invasive, non-pharmacological solution that is an effective alternative to the use of invasive or prescription medications that can present side effects that may impact daily activities.

Dr. Joao L. de Quevedo, Director of the Treatment-Resistant Depression Program at the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, McGovern Medical School, the University of Texas Science Center at Houston (UT Health Houston), hails the clearance granted by the FDA for utilizing TMS in the treatment of adolescents diagnosed with MDD as a “momentous stride towards advancing mental health care.”

He continues to cite the FDA’s decision is “bolstered by extensive clinical evidence attesting to the safety and efficacy of TMS in adolescent populations.”  Dr. Quevedo states that unlike traditional antidepressant medications that carry “a host of systemic side effects, TMS therapy is localized to the targeted brain regions, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions elsewhere in the body.”

Neuro Fitness Behavioral Health utilizes TMS to treat the following cognitive disorders:

MDD - Reduces symptoms of persistent sadness and cognitive sluggishness.

Anxiety Disorders - Alleviates excessive worry and stress-related impairments.

OCD - Helps reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

PTSD - Eases trauma-related symptoms and intrusive thoughts.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) - Stabilizes mood swings, particularly depressive episodes.

ADHD - Improves focus and impulse control.

Schizophrenia (Negative Symptoms) - Enhances motivation and cognitive function.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) - Slows cognitive decline and memory loss.

Alzheimer’s Disease (Early Stages) - Boosts memory and thinking in early stages.

A Holistic Approach to Treating Cognitive Disorders with State-of-the-Art Technology

Neuro Fitness Behavioral Health uses the latest advancements in TMS and neurofeedback technology to provide patients with the highest level of care. The clinic employs FDA-approved TMS equipment and advanced neurofeedback systems that are tailored to each patient’s specific needs.

To ensure that individuals receive the most effective and efficient treatments available the holistic care process begins with a team of highly trained professionals in the fields of neuroscience, psychiatry and psychology working together as they complete a comprehensive patient assessment to understand the patient’s  unique brain patterns, symptoms, and goals.  Utilizing these results the team develops a treatment plan that incorporates TMS, neurofeedback and other therapeutic modalities when necessary.

The keys to Neuro Fitness Behavioral Health’s non-pharmacological solutions are the use of TMS and Neurofeedback.  TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate brain regions associated with mood and cognition.  Neurofeedback uses real-time data to help regulate physiological functions and brain activity.

TMS

TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain that are thought to be involved in mood regulation and cognitive function. By delivering focused magnetic pulses to the brain, TMS helps to enhance the electrical activity of neurons, thereby improving communication between different parts of the brain. This has been particularly effective in treating depression, anxiety, and other cognitive disorders by addressing underactive regions of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex.

For individuals suffering from MDD, TMS has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms in patients who have not responded to traditional treatments like medication and therapy.  It is also being used to treat addiction, PTSD, OCD, and ADD by targeting areas of the brain involved in decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation.

TMS and Overcoming OCD Specifically

OCD is a mental health condition characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that an individual feels driven to perform. These obsessions and compulsions can be highly distressing and disruptive, often consuming significant time and energy and impacting daily life. Traditional treatments, like medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), can be effective, but some individuals experience treatment-resistant OCD symptoms.  TMS offers a promising non-invasive alternative by targeting specific areas of the brain, particularly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and other regions involved in emotional regulation and habit formation. By modulating the activity in these circuits, TMS can reduce the intensity of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors, providing relief for individuals who may not respond fully to conventional treatments.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG Biofeedback, is a therapeutic technique that involves monitoring and training brainwave activity in real-time. Using sensors placed on the scalp, neurofeedback measures brainwaves and provides individuals with feedback through visual or auditory cues. The goal is to train the brain to reach optimal functioning by encouraging the brain to produce certain frequencies that are associated with calmness, focus, and emotional balance.

Neurofeedback has been particularly successful in treating conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, and sleep disorders. By helping individuals regulate their brainwave patterns, neurofeedback empowers patients to better manage symptoms of emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

The Connection Between Mental Health and Brain Function

Many mental health conditions are linked to abnormalities in brain activity. For example, in depression, certain regions of the brain may become hypoactive (underactive), leading to a decrease in mood regulation, while others may become hyperactive, leading to anxiety or intrusive thoughts. In conditions like PTSD, the brain’s ability to process and respond to stress can become impaired, causing individuals to experience exaggerated reactions to triggers.

Both TMS and neurofeedback aim to correct these imbalances by stimulating or training the brain to function optimally. The beauty of these therapies lies in their ability to target and heal the brain without the need for medication, offering patients a drug-free alternative to traditional treatments.

Prior to beginning his research, a Stanford (University) Medicine postdoctoral fellow in psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Anish Mitra, acknowledged that TMS provided fast relief to many severely depressed patients who did not respond to traditional treatments.  However, it was unclear how TMS actually improved the condition.

With the assistance of Mark Raichle, MD, and Nolan Williams, MD, who used their collective knowledge and incorporated their findings from previous research projects to determine if TMS has the ability to change the flow of neurological signals flow through the brain.

The team’s study involved looking at two portions of the brain, the anterior insula, a region of the brain that integrates bodily sensations, like heart rate and temperature, and the anterior cingulate cortex, a region that governs emotions, and the flow of neurological signals between the regions.

The team found that for individuals not suffering from depression, their neurological signals flowed from the anterior insula to the anterior cingulate cortex.  For these individuals bodily sensations primarily influenced their behavioral responses, not their emotions.

In individuals suffering from depression, the neurological signals travel in the opposite direction, from the anterior cingulate cortex to the anterior insula.  This allows the individual’s behavioral response to be governed by their emotions.  Also, the more severe state of depression was marked with a higher proportion of the signals traveling in the reverse direction.

The second phase of the study involved treating patients with a TMS protocol developed by Mitra.  After undergoing the treatment protocol, Mitra and the team found that individuals suffering from depression had a noted improvement in their depressive state.  Additionally, the flow of their neurological signals had shifted to resemble the same pattern found in individuals not suffering from depression crediting TMS with altering the directional pathway of their neurological signals.

After reviewing the results of their studying the FDA cleared their treatment protocol for use in TMS and Neurofeedback therapies.

Why TMS and Neurofeedback Are Gaining Popularity in Treating Mental Health Disorders

1.      Non-invasive and Drug Free Treatments- TMS and Neurofeedback offer a non-invasive alternative that does not rely on invasive procedures or the use of prescription medications.

2.      Efficacy in Treating Resistant Conditions- Both TMS and neurofeedback have been shown to be particularly effective for individuals whose conditions have not improved with conventional treatments. In cases of treatment-resistant depression, where antidepressant medications fail, TMS has become a game-changer, offering patients a new hope for recovery. Similarly, neurofeedback has been shown to improve symptoms in patients with ADHD, anxiety, sleep disorders, and addiction.

3.      Highly Personalized Solutions- TMS can be adjusted to target specific areas of the brain based on the individual’s needs, while neurofeedback uses real-time brainwave data to tailor the training process to each patient’s unique brain activity patterns. This personalized approach increases the likelihood of success and promotes a deeper level of healing.

4.      Complementary to Traditional Therapies- TMS and neurofeedback do not replace traditional therapies such as talk therapy, counseling, or medications. Instead, they complement these treatments by addressing the physiological aspects of mental health, helping to optimize brain function. Many patients find that combining these therapies with psychotherapy or medication enhances their overall treatment outcomes.

TMS and neurofeedback can be powerful additions to traditional mental health treatments, which often include medications. While medications like antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and mood stabilizers are essential for many patients, they primarily address the chemical aspects of mental health by regulating neurotransmitter levels in the brain. This biochemical approach is effective for many, but some patients experience incomplete relief or challenging side effects.
