Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA (May 6, 2022)
On May 5th, the Peninsula Committee Children's Hospital (PCCH) held a reception at the Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC) to judge poster artwork submitted for the 64th Annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show being held September 9 – 11th at Ernie Howlett Park. It is a prestigious honor for the contest winners since the 1st place selection will be showcased on hundreds of PBNHS posters displayed across the South Bay, while the other finalists’ artwork will be considered for the horse show program cover and related materials
Generously sponsored by Lisa and Chuck Noski, the contest was coordinated by the PVAC’s Executive Director Daniela Saxa-Kaneko and local artist Val Simon, who issued the call for entries to their talented community of artists. At the end of the festive Cinco de Mayo themed evening, five winners were announced and given cash awards totaling $1,500. Additionally, $1,500 was donated to both the PVAC and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in the winning artist’s name.
“We are very grateful for our partnership with the Palos Verdes Art Center for the fifth year in a row,” noted Poster Chair Janice Latimer. “Their promotion of the contest and remarkable access to their artists is truly invaluable.”
The winning artists are Joy Gonzalez (1st Place), Debbie Giese (2nd Place), Laura Millman (3rd Place), Susan Whiting (4th Place) and local Peninsula High School student Skylar Rapoport (5th Place). Joy Gonzalez featured her niece Savannah (12) on horseback in her 1st place winning entry. “I am thrilled to have won the poster contest and look forward to attending the horse show!” said an enthusiastic Gonzalez.
So don’t miss all the fun! Mark your calendars for the 64th Annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show on September 9 – 11th and see up close and in person some of the West Coast’s most talented riders and their magnificent horses. For three days, this A-rated national horse show will have two fully scheduled rings offering a wide variety of classes, including the prestigious PCHA Horsemanship Medal Finals for riders 14 and under and 18-34, as well as the PCHA Victor Hugo-Vidal Adult Horsemanship Class for riders 35 and over. In addition, the $10,000 Harman Jr.-A/O Jumper Classic and the $15,000 Seahorse Jumper Classic promise to challenge competitors with difficult and exciting courses.
The Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital is unique in that entire families become involved in the colorful and festive show. They provide planning, preparation and personnel to staff the event, and in the process, give over 15,000 volunteer hours each year. An atmosphere of old-fashioned hometown fun is created through the decorations, booths and boutiques. Magic shows, pony rides, face painting and a moon bounce are just a few of the popular activities in the Children’s Circle. In addition, many food booths entice the crowds with delicious items for breakfast and lunch as well as tasty snacks.
