Mermaid Kisses and Starfish Wishes for International Mermaid Day By Sheri Fink
“Always be yourself. Unless you can be a mermaid. Then always be a mermaid.” ~ Unknown
Confession: I have been enamored with mermaids ever since I was a little girl. I’m not sure when they first entered my awareness. Maybe it was Daryl Hannah’s portrayal of a real-life mermaid in Splash, or the adorable family of mermaid toys I had adventures with in my childhood bathtub. I’ve loved them my entire life.
Growing up, I wanted to be a writer, a teacher, a mother, a princess, and a mermaid. I stubbornly refused to listen to anyone who told me my dreams weren’t possible, even as a secretly wondered if I would be able to make them come true.
I’ve been blessed to follow my inspiration into a career writing children’s books that help kids build their self-esteem. Publishing my first book in 2011 after a long career in the corporate world showed me that our wildest dreams can come true. It awakened my curiosity about what additional goals I had considered to be “unrealistic,” that might actually be possible for me.
One of those dreams was to be a mermaid. Following the success of my first five children’s books and armed with my “everything is possible” mindset, I started researching ways to achieve my goal. Back then, mermaids weren’t as popular and there weren’t as many opportunities as there are today. I was lucky to discover a mermaid photographer in Southern California who crafted her own colorful, swim-friendly mermaid tails and took beautiful oceanside photos. I shared my vision with her and she brought it to life even better than I imagined.
I continued pursuing my love of writing and will be publishing my fifteenth book this September. Throughout my author career, I have taught kids through my books, presentations, and school visits. I dress up as a mermaid for fun at Comic-Con and for some of our author appearances to make learning to read more exciting for young children. I got lucky and married a man who treats me like a princess. We even had a unicorn at our wedding, and I’m delighted to share that I will officially become a mother in July when our baby girl is born.
I’ve been fortunate to have some pretty magical experiences, and I’m sure there are many more to come. However, becoming a mermaid for a day is still one of the best days of my life. I love sharing the photos from that special day because it reminds me that we create our own magic and that we should never give up on our dreams, no matter how crazy they may seem to anyone else.
On March 29th, we celebrate International Mermaid Day. I’ll not only be high-finning my vibrant mermaid community, but also remembering back when I was a little girl with big dreams. I’ll feel the pure joy in my heart that I experienced the day when my mermaid dream came true.
If you have a big, juicy dream, find ways that you can achieve it. It may be closer than you think. Everything is possible. Go for it and have fun. Wishing you a mer-mazing life ahead filled with magical, meaningful, and memorable experiences!
