What It’s Like Designing A Piece of Custom Jewelry With Diamond Expert Dan Moran of Concierge Diamonds
There comes a point in each of our lives where we can start checking off major milestones and accomplishments. When that happens, say when people either obtain a position they’ve been jockeying to hold for many years, or they reach a level of personal wealth or perhaps even just an anniversary to commemorate a milestone, we often tend to reward ourselves with the fruits of our labor. Many people opt for vacations, expensive wine or other status symbols, but some people opt to commemorate their achievements with a piece of custom jewelry.
That’s where I come in. My name is Dan Moran and I’m a third-generation diamond expert and private jeweler. I own a bespoke bridal and fine jewelry company called Concierge Diamonds based in Los Angeles, and my expertise and reputation have allowed me to work with high net worth clients all over the world. People come to me from as far away as Australia to commission custom pieces with me and it’s my genuine pleasure to help breathe life into their visions.
The process typically starts with clients coming to me with an idea for a piece they want to commission. Sometimes, their ideas are esoteric and we’re attempting to convey a special moment in time for them but often they know exactly what they want because they’ve been dreaming about this moment for years.
We have a series of conversations about the specifics of the piece: what gemstones are we using, what metal, what budget considerations do we need to take into account, and of course, timing. Once my clients provide me with this information, my team and I conduct a meticulous search for the perfect gemstones. Many of my clients prefer to make their rings or other pieces of fine jewelry with diamonds, but we also work with gems such as tourmaline, alexandrite, padparadscha sapphires and more.
I can work just as easily with my clients remotely via phone and email but if they have the option, I love inviting them to my offices in Downtown Los Angeles to see their stone curations in person. For clients in the South Bay, I often meet with them at Rolling Hills Country Club or another convenient location. Some of my clients like to be very hands on and will come to me with sketches and drawings, but often they will rely on the talent of my artisans to sketch out their pieces.
Once the gemstones and the design are finalized, I get my team busy on crafting the piece. How intricate the design is will dictate the time the piece will need to be in production but we have those conversations upfront, so if my clients are making a purchase for a special anniversary or holiday, they can plan accordingly.
The best moment is when we get to reveal the finished piece to the client. I can’t tell you how many times my clients have said it but photos and videos of the finished pieces rarely do it justice. There’s nothing like seeing your vision turned into a reality and I get to share that joy with all of my clients.
Just like no two people’s love stories are identical, nor are my team’s bespoke creations - and that’s the Concierge Diamonds difference.
