Marine Layer in Palos Verdes

by Matthew Partsch PHOTOGRAPHER

Capturing the marine layer at sunrise is always a treat in Palos Verdes from the Del Cero viewpoint.  The cloud inversion was low enough on January 25th to blanket the mountains and allowing the trees at Eagle’s Nest Trail to snuggle in the fog.  On this day, the clouds were moving in and out giving me the opportunity to capture some stunning shots before and after the sun came over the horizon.  I also shot a time-lapse over 1 hours showing how the marine layer breathes in and out.

I really love hiking and mountain biking in this area.  There are so many trails and wildlife, coupled with the view and the intensity of the workout, it is one of a kind.

When I first moved to LA, the viewpoint at Del Cero was my chosen place for inspiration.  It is also the first place I bring people to witness the beauty of the area.

This picture is showing the fog getting pulled back into the ocean just as the sunrise hit the edge allowing it to glow.

These are the dead trees on the Eagles Nest Trail hidden in the fog.

Before sunrise the fog filled in the valley.

Right before sunrise, the sky glowing orange while the valley was in the fog.

A moment when the fog was reflecting the morning sun.The sun lit up the forward fog, but the background fog was still in shadow - Eagles Nest Trail.

Early morning at a time called “Blue Hour” which is about 20 minutes before the sun rises.

My love of the outdoors makes for frequent forays into the Californian wilds, where I delight in the stunning vistas of Los Angeles Beaches,  and the Pacific Coast.

My company name, Blue Cloud Photography, comes from a picture I took in 1997.  After sunset the high clouds were dark blue, while some lower ones were bright orange and it only lasted seconds - I ran into the house, grabbed my camera, and snapped the picture - it sparked a never-ending quest to capture that moment in time to capture that blue hour light.
