Golden Scoop Gelato Comes to Golden Cove Center By Writer, Artist and Contributor Lynne La Fleur
Just shy of a week of opening (Monday February 3), Golden Scoop Gelato is already the buzz of the neighborhood, so much so that by Thursday they had nearly run out of some their most popular flavors! All good, their small batch back-up was quickly replenished the next day.
I jumped at the chance to try one of the more exotic flavors: Earl Grey and Honey, not too sweet, with just a subtle hint of the spice and smoke of the tea.
Some of the flavors that caught my eye include Chai Tea Latte, Lemon Basil, Passion Orange Guava, 100% Sicilian Pistachio, Sea Salt Caramel and Italian Cheesecake. Favorites like Chocolate Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Mango, Cookies and Cream are all here too.
I had a sit-down chat over an espresso with owner Nathan Kang about chasing his gelato dream.
“I love gelato! I’ve traveled all over the globe as an investment banker; I’ve tasted different foods and flavors in many different countries. But it was in Italy where I discovered the gelaterias in Sicily. I fell in love with the surrounding scenery and their wonderful gelatos, and I knew I wanted to begin my dream of a gelato shop right here on the Peninsula in Rancho Palos Verdes - the Mediterranean climate, nature all around us with the sea right on our doorstep. But there was no gelato!
“I was lucky enough to connect with a third generation gelati chef and I knew we had the perfect match. I wanted to create an authentic specialty gelato and coffee experience just like the ones I remembered from Italy!
“Everything we make is created in small batches from natural, local ingredients including Real California Milk. Our award-winning gelato chef uses no eggs, no powders or artificial ingredients.
Most people are confused about the difference between ice cream and gelato, and I’m no exception. Nathan explains, “Ice cream has a much higher fat content, 10% to 25%, where as gelato is about half that 7.9%. Gelato has more milk and less cream. Gelato is denser than ice cream and ice cream has a fluffier texture.”
Servings come in varied sized from quarts and pints to smaller cups and cones. The interior is welcoming and staff is ready to offer sample tastes. Catering for parties and special events is available.
I’m definitely going back for more!
