Hoofbeats on the Hill: Exploring the Equestrian Life in Palos Verdes By Writer and Contributor Emily McGinn
Your guide to how to get involved in Palos Verdes horse culture.
The Palos Verdes Peninsula is known for many things, from ocean views to great trails. One of the many unique aspects of the community is the strong horse culture on the Peninsula. But how do you get involved in the equestrian community on the Hill?
There are plenty of options for those looking to get plugged in, both for experienced and beginner riders. Here are some good places to start:
Located in Palos Verdes Estates, Palos Verdes Stables has been around since 1926. It offers the whole gamut of equestrian activities, from trail rides to lessons and training. It has options for people of any riding level.
Mystic Canyon Stable offers recreational horseback riding lessons and training camps. This stable is a good option for those looking to learn key riding skills and how to take care of a horse.
3. Portuguese Bend Riding Club
Portuguese Bend Riding Club in Rancho Palos Verdes offers boarding, trail rides, and riding lessons. It is open to all skill levels.
Palos Verdes Horse Rentals offers trail rides around the Peninsula. It is a good option for special events, like birthday parties and engagements.
5. Peter Weber Equestrian Center
This stable in Rolling Hills Estates stands out because of its wide array of activities for children. Not only does it have boarding facilities and multiple trainers, but it also offers pony rides, field trips and even a petting zoo.
6. Palos Verdes Peninsula Horsemen’s Association
Though it is not a riding center or stable, this volunteer-run nonprofit organization aims to protect and preserve equestrian areas and trails around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It came together in 1982 in response to the erosion of horse trails because of development in the area. The club aims to bring the local equestrian community together, to provide resources and education about the preservation of equestrian areas and to help maintain trails in the Palos Verdes region.
There is a place for everyone interested in joining the local equestrian community in one of the stables, centers or organizations around the Peninsula as these groups keep the equestrian tradition of the area alive.
