How ‘Bout Them Apples

The popular Apple Pie Contest brings out the culinary flair in entrants aged 7 to 97! All pies must be homemade and contain apples and all entries are due in by 8:30AM. On a whim, my friend Christine entered her apple pie few years ago and won! Generations of winners boast about winning the contest for years!

Merrymaking Bike Parade

Our community is full of some of the most creative parents and kids so it is no surprise that the Bike Parade is always a colorful and fun must-see event. Onlookers cheer and clap for all participants while photos and videos shot that day memorialize a key childhood experience for family posterity.

Picnic Chill & Family Games

Spread out a blanket, lean back in your beach chair and listen to live patriotic music while you enjoy the day’s festivities from your comfortable front row seat. A full picnic basket of family favorites or hamburgers and hot dogs cooked by the Boy Scout Troop 257 will sustain you as you sing along to the star spangled banner and watch your kids compete in the sack race.

 America’s Favorite Pastime

We have been fortunate that our community attracts outstanding speakers to observe July 4th with us. One of our favorite Heritage of Freedom keynote speakers from the past was actor Jimmy Stewart who served with the Army Air Force in WWII, and this year, we are honored to hear from the always engaging speaker Mark Langill, Team Historian for the Los Angeles Dodgers. So, if you have them, wear your favorite patriotic Dodger blue jerseys!

 No Place Like Home

The Van Dine Family Americanism Award will be presented to Monique Sugimoto the Archivist and Local History Librarian with the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD). Monique was instrumental in creating the comprehensive Doors Open Peninsula Commemorative Booklet celebrating 100 Years of history on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. She is also the broadcaster of the entertaining electric bike tour video series, Pedal PV which airs on PVLD’s YouTube channel. Just like the peninsula she loves, Monique is a community treasure!
