Rolling Hills Country Club and the Luxury Rally Club - Celebrating the Beauty and History of the Automobile - Story by Steve Tabor and Photographs by John Perchulyn
California has few rivals when it comes to states or regions that have had the automobile so entrenched in its culture as well as its economic and population development. The Golden State plays host to a variety of car clubs, numerous weekly coffee and car displays, and of course, Monterey County’s Car Week culminating in world-renowned Concourse d’Elegance at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Over the past three years, the Rolling Hills Country Club has presented the Rolling Hills Country Club Wine and Car Festival, but for this year’s event, they reached out to Palos Verdes Peninsula residents and classic car collectors, Craig Ekberg and Trevor Johnson, who are the Directors of the Luxury Rally Club (LRC) “to stage an event like no other in Southern California.” Johnson affirms, “We are striving to create an event that will be entertaining as well as an opportunity to relax and enjoy the afternoon.”
According to Johnson, “The event will not be open to judging. It is meant to be an afternoon where drivers and participants can take time to appreciate the beauty and the art of these automobiles and enjoy incredible food and wine selections.” The automobiles will be staged across the driving range and positioned so visitors have ample space and opportunities to view these unique vehicles. Johnson insists, “As far as the automobiles being displayed, the emphasis is not on the quantity of the cars, but the quality of the cars on display.” Each of the 100 vehicles on display has been especially chosen by the LRC because of its uniqueness to its era and its “wow” factor. Some of the cars to be displayed are from the City of Los Angeles’ own Petersen Automotive Museum’s Checkered Flag Club collection.
When viewing these incredible machines, Johnson suggests, “The viewer should take a step back in time to the period when it was produced, the type of driver who owned the car, and the craftsmanship and engineering behind creating the final product.”
All of the cars that will be on display are privately owned and in driving condition. Johnson states, “The drivers of these automobiles are passionate not only about cars, but the particular car they own. They take great pride in maintaining these vehicles and appreciate their standing in automotive history. The drivers especially enjoy these types of events because of the absence of judging. Each driver simply enjoys the camaraderie and being able to show and share insights about their car!”
Johnson confides, “We are hoping to grow this event into something very special. We are placing much effort into creating a memorable experience and an outstanding atmosphere for spectators and drivers alike by celebrating each of the cars on display in a fantastic venue with outstanding wine and food selections.”
This invitation only event will take place on Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
