Tiger Squadron Puts their Wheels to the Ground by John Perchulyn
Recently the Tiger Squadron, the precision FORMATION FLYING TEAM and AIRCRAFT DISPLAY TEAM based in Southern California, hit the ground. The team not only likes to fly their planes but also enjoy an occasional car rally.
The Labor Day weekend rally began with a meetup at Craig Ekberg’s hanger at Zamperini Field where the route is reviewed with all of the drivers. Craig is the lead pilot and whether it’s flying planes or driving cars, he clearly defines the “formation and route”.
The cars range from an exotic 2020 Ford GT to a very rare 1948 Oldsmobile woody and everything in-between. Muscle cars, antique cars to foreign sports cars.
After a traditional group photo the team and fellow car buffs head down P.C.H. to Redondo Beach making a left turn at Knob Hill for a cruise down the Esplanade. The Esplanade walkers stop to watch the rally drive by.
For lunch and a cool drink the rally makes a stop at St Honore French Bakery & Cafe in Lunada Bay. There they stretch their legs and also talk with some of the locals that had questions about the cars.
Departing the bakery they head to Cabrillo beach for a stop to enjoy the ocean breeze and show off their cars to the locals.
The Ford GT of course received the most attention with the Woody taking a close second.
