Spectacular San Pedro Sunrises By Dianne Gowder
You may remember that I did a piece about the stunning sunsets on the Peninsula a few months ago, so today I am taking on an early morning walk on the other side of the hill, for some views of the sunrise.
I am an avid walker, I live in San Pedro and my favorite time of day to walk is early in the morning I rarely miss a sunrise.
On Mondays I usually walk at the Cabrillo way Marina here in town. I refer to it as Marina Monday, and it’s a great place to catch the sunrise and the reflections on the water.
Sunrises come in all colors, so every morning is a wonderful surprise.
Another favorite place to catch the sunrise is Cabrillo Beach. I try to walk there at least once every week, it is so wonderful and serene at 6 am, sometimes I see dolphins and there are always plenty of sea birds. It’s fun to walk to the end of the parking lot when the seas are rough and watch the waves come up on to the breakwater.
You just never know what you will see! The seal made my day.
There are many places in San Pedro to watch the sunrise, not just by the water. I love the White Point Nature preserve, also Angel’s Gate Park, The Korean Bell and the lookout point on Gaffey street. Luckily for me they are all on my regular walking routes!
If you time it right you can watch the sun come up behind the lighthouse in Point Fermin Park, which is a very popular walking area, with good reason as you will see.
San Pedro is home to the Port of Los Angeles which, together with Long Beach, is the busiest port on the West Coast, and a cruise ship terminal ( currently sitting idle but hopefully not for too much longer) We are also commercial fishing harbor, which became a favorite walking spot for me while the Martina was closed. I love to watch the herons, gulls and pelicans soaring above me.
If you are not an early riser I hope my photos my inspire you to set your alarm for 5 am one morning so you can enjoy a magnificent sunrise. That’s right I said 5 am, it’s June and the sun is coming over the horizon pretty early, you surely don’t want to miss it!
Thank you for joining me on another photographic journey.

Dianne loves to walk and she tries to do at least 3 miles every day before she heads out to work. Her love of photography evolved from her walks.
“ I have always been amazed by scenery here and more and more I found myself stopping to capture the beauty of my surroundings. As I shared my work I realized that very few people were even aware of what they have on their doorstep!”
Dianne has made it her mission to share the beauty through her photographs and she takes her friends on walks as often as possible.
