Stunning Sunsets on the Palos Verdes Peninsula By Dianne Gowder
Why do we get such stunning sunsets? It turns out that we live in one of the best places in the world to experience these wonders! We face the ocean and there is nothing between us and the horizon and we are a good distance from both the Equator and the North Pole, so we get a longer twilight. All these factors make for a great sunset.
I took this one at Pelican Cove park, at the golden hour.
Sunsets come in many colors, like this one taken on the cliffs in Palos Verdes Estates, it changed from gold to pink to deep red.I captured this one in December, which is very often one of the best months for sunset chasing!
So, what is the deal? We always say winter sunsets are the best, and I thought I would find out why.
In winter we are closer to the sun, not to get technical, the earth moves a little faster around the sun and this makes twilight last longer. Twilight is my favorite time, after the sun has set and all those glorious colors emerge as you can see from the photo.
These stunning colors are caused by the light passing through layers of air and the layers are filled with dust and water particles. Yes, we do breathe that air too..
This in turn causes the sun’s light to bend as if through a prism, which scatters the light.
This photo was taken at Pelican Cove park in December. As you can see it is quite different from the first photo, which was taken in October.
Let’s just take a visual walk around and look at some glorious sunsets How about Hesse Park, right on Hawthorne Blvd. it’s a wonderful place to catch the sunset and get your exercise at the same time. Join the community and circle the park a few times, you’ll forget you are exercising when you have views like this.
Lunada Bay is very popular with sunset chasers. It seldom disappoints.
This was taken at another popular spot. The overlook on Palos Verdes Drive north, you might have to compete for parking space here
Point Vicente is one of my go to places to catch the sunset. I know, along with everybody else.
While we are out chasing sunsets let’s not forget Terranea, raise a glass and toast some magnificent sunsets at this very popular spot. Happy sunset chasing! I will see you out there!

Dianne loves to walk and she tries to do at least 3 miles every day before she heads out to work. Her love of photography evolved from her walks.
“ I have always been amazed by scenery here and more and more I found myself stopping to capture the beauty of my surroundings. As I shared my work I realized that very few people were even aware of what they have on their doorstep!”
Dianne has made it her mission to share the beauty through her photographs and she takes her friends on walks as often as possible.
